The First Lady of the Alps

The research process for Salt of the Earth included visiting Zürich’s Zentralbibliothek, the same library where Lenin penned his revolutionary treatises. In the Handschriftsaal (Handwriting Room) one can read original documents of the period. I spent hours poring over faded letters.

That’s where I came across the story of Meta Brevoort, mountaineer, record breaker and inspiration.

Alpinism in the early 1900s was a world dominated by men, so for a woman to tackle the most challenging peaks (while wearing a long skirt), was quite extraordinary.

Add to the mix Brevoort’s climbing companions; her nephew William, her guide Christian and her dog Tschingel.

These characters deserved their own book: The First Lady of the Alps.
