The Patience of Trees
What does it mean to ‘live in interesting times’?
Halfway up a Swiss mountain, Olivier Paul knows nothing but isolation and near slavery. Aged 15, he learns his father was an itinerant labourer and his mother came from the noble Favre family. He flees the farm to discover his roots.
Charlotte Favre rejects the status quo and campaigns passionately for a woman’s right to vote. To her surprise, history professor Leon adds his voice to help persuade her fellow countrywomen. But what are his real motives?
Olivier travels to Fribourg to meet the Favres and prove he is their blood relative. His bombshell shocks Charlotte and her siblings, revealing decades of secrets and betrayal.
With Europe’s fragile peace fraying, the prospect of conflict casts a threatening shadow, drawing clans closer together. Can Oliver and Charlotte escape the patterns of the past and find their own paths to happiness in the future?
Set between 1928 and 1932, The Patience of Trees follows two Favre family members fighting their own battles against the backdrop of the Wall Street Crash, the Great Depression, the rise of the National Socialists and the Spanish Civil War.

Genuinely illuminating historical fiction
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It's a bold claim for me to declare a "new favorite author," but it might just be J.J. Marsh.
The plots of these books are intricate, well-paced and engrossing. That said, in many ways the plots are secondary to the characters, which is the real reason you will fall in love with this series.
I sincerely hope Ms. Marsh decides to continue this series so I can step back into the Favre's richly textured world and extend my escape from this increasingly troubled one.

Great Series
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
These books in this series are fascinating to read what took place in the past and how one family lived and survived in Switzerland. Amazing to learn women did not get to vote till many years after WW2 in Switzerland. Great characters and storyline. Any book this author writes is going to be wonderful!

Set in Switzerland in the 1920s and 30s, this worthy novel traces the story of an orphan lad, born low-class, finding his independent way in the world of his new-found high-class family, jobs and friends.
An interesting social history story.
